Practice nowThe First Sounds exercise

Who it is used with

Hearing the sounds inside words can be hard when sounds in speech get mixed up. Sound practice is often used with:

Start on Same or Different?, Level 1. The sounds are very different there.

How to use it

Tap Listen

Hear the sounds, or a word and a sound. Replay as often as you like.

Tap your answer

Same or Different, Yes or No, or the sound that is different. A first miss gets a second try.

It moves on by itself

Or tap Skip. After 10 questions the set is done.

Modes

The numbered strip at the top switches the mode. Everything is listening and tapping. No speaking.

Same or Different?

Hear two sounds. Are they the same or different?

Sound in the Word

Hear a word and a sound. Is the sound anywhere in the word?

First Sound

Does the word start with this sound?

Last Sound

Does the word end with this sound?

Odd One Out

Hear three sounds. Tap the one that is different.

Ways to get through it

When the sounds blur together, there is help on the card.

Hint

Each tap shows the written letters for one sound and plays it again. The last tap shows the answer.

Levels

In Settings, tick SLP mode: Level 1 uses very different sounds, Level 2 similar sounds, Level 3 near pairs like b and p. The same panel slows the sounds and sets the gap between them.

The method behind it

Phonological awareness practice. Listening for sounds and where they sit in a word, a task speech-language pathologists use alongside word-finding work.

What comes after first sounds?

When the sounds feel clear, move one step up:
