Doctors and therapists walk in, deliver information, and walk out — and somehow you're supposed to understand it and act on it right away. You're allowed to slow that down.
Keep a pen and paper by the bed. When a provider tells you something and it doesn't land, say so: "I'm overwhelmed. Can you tell me that again? What does this mean for us? What's the next step?" And when the questions show up five minutes after they leave the room — that happens to everyone, including me — write them down and ask the next person who walks in.
Nobody can expect you to handle this perfectly. It's probably your first time dealing with it. Take up space. Take up time. Ask for what you need, want, or don't know.
