Here's the part that makes me genuinely angry as a therapist: acalculia almost never gets treated. Speech therapy targets language. Occupational therapy targets daily function. Number skills fall in the gap between them — and the person is left guessing at the grocery store. But numbers are language too: reading "47," saying "forty-seven," and understanding what it means are all language operations. That's why stroke-related language damage so often drags number skills with it — and why, like language, they respond to structured practice.
